One thing to be clear about before you choose. The ILUMA Standard has Autostart, but it does not have a touch screen, FlexPuff, FlexBattery or Pause Mode.

Those four arrived with the ILUMA i generation, so a shop listing them on a first generation ILUMA has it wrong. On this model the session is the plain one: up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, with no way to pause it and no screen to read.

Does the battery suit a device that lives at home?

It suits it well. Up to 20 uses per full charge means the device at home rarely runs out between charges, because it is near a plug anyway.

The holder does 2 back-to-back sessions before returning to the pocket charger. At home that limit is barely noticed, since the charger is usually sitting right there.

A full charge takes 2 hours 15 minutes. The slower charge time only stings when you are out, which is exactly why the two piece set makes a good stay-at-home device.

Which sticks does a household device need?

The same TEREA sticks as every other ILUMA. There is no separate stick line for the Standard tier and no variant made for home use.

TEREA carries a SMARTCORE element that the induction coil heats. HEETS have no such element and will not work, and TEREA will not work in a blade device such as IQOS ORIGINALS or IQOS 3 DUO.

That means a household with two ILUMA devices buys one kind of stick for both. The compatible device list is worth a look if there is an older IQOS in the house too.

How do you use the ILUMA Standard day to day?

Take the holder from the charger and push a TEREA stick in up to the line. Autostart begins preheating on its own, with no button to press or hold.

Preheating runs about 20 seconds. The session lasts up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever comes first, and stops by itself.

Take the stick out, bin it, and put the holder back in the charger. Nothing needs emptying and there is no pause and resume on this generation.

Should this be your only device or your second one?

As your only device it works fine, and most owners run just one. The pocket charger goes where you go, which is the whole point of the two piece format.

As a second device it works better still, because the weakness of a two piece set is carrying it and a home device never has to be carried. Pair it with an all-in-one for days out and neither device is doing a job it is bad at.

Skip a second device entirely if one covers your day. Two devices is a convenience, not a requirement, and the Pebble Beige ILUMA or any other finish is the same hardware if you simply prefer a different colour.

Is there upkeep on a device kept at home?

Almost none. There is no blade, so no residue builds up and no cleaning cycle exists, however often it is used.

A device left in a drawer for a week needs nothing done to it before the next stick. Wipe the outside when it picks up dust or marks.
